A finance system landscape is the complete architecture of technology platforms, integration layers, and data flows that collectively support an enterprise’s financial operations — from transaction capture to board-level reporting. It is not a single system. It is a stack, and the quality of that stack is determined not by any individual platform but by how cleanly the layers communicate with one another.

In a typical medium-to-large enterprise operating across the Arab world, the finance system landscape consists of four distinct layers, each with a defined role:

The ERP is the system of record. The EPM is the system of performance. The BI platform is the system of insight. The automation layer is the connective tissue. When organisations treat these as separate investments rather than an integrated architecture, they accumulate technical debt that manifests as manual reconciliations, version conflicts, and finance teams unable to trust any single number.

Where the Landscape Fails

Integration seams between the ERP and EPM are the most common failure point. Data extracted from an ERP’s general ledger must conform to the EPM’s dimensional model — and those two models are almost never naturally aligned. Chart of accounts mismatches, cost centre hierarchies that differ between systems, and intercompany entity structures that the ERP tracks at transaction level but the EPM consolidates at a higher node are the three most common sources of reconciliation breaks.

Between the EPM and the BI layer, the typical failure mode is semantic inconsistency: the EPM calculates a revenue figure using one set of allocation rules, the BI dashboard pulls actuals from the ERP using a different extraction logic, and an executive receives two different revenue numbers from two different screens. Neither figure is wrong in isolation. Together, they destroy confidence in both systems.

Regional Architecture Considerations

In GCC enterprise environments, the finance system landscape carries additional complexity. Arabic character encoding must be validated at every integration boundary — an ERP posting in Arabic that passes through an ETL layer not configured for UTF-8 will arrive in the EPM as corrupted dimension values. ZATCA e-invoicing mandates in Saudi Arabia require that invoice data captured in the ERP remain traceable through the EPM for VAT reporting — meaning the landscape must preserve source transaction references through every transformation step. Multi-GAAP reporting requirements common in listed GCC group structures — IFRS at the group level, local GAAP at the subsidiary level — require that the EPM consolidation layer maintain parallel value sets rather than overwriting actuals during the close.
