A finance technology business case is the financial and operational justification for an investment in enterprise software — Oracle EPM, ERP, BI, or automation — built from the organisation’s own operational data rather than from vendor benchmark statistics, quantifying the current-state cost, the improvement the investment will deliver, the realistic total cost of implementation and operation, and the return timeline that a CFO or board would apply to any capital investment decision.
The most common failure in finance technology business cases is the reliance on vendor-provided ROI benchmarks: “organisations implementing Oracle EPM reduce their close cycle by 30 to 40 percent.” These figures are averages across organisations with very different starting points, readiness levels, and implementation quality. A business case built on them will not survive contact with a board that applies the same scrutiny to technology investments as to capital expenditure — and it should not.
A credible business case for a finance technology investment measures the current-state cost from the organisation’s own operations: close cycle duration multiplied by finance team headcount cost, planning cycle time, error rate and reconciliation overhead, regulatory submission preparation cost. The improvement case models specific, achievable changes in those metrics based on the implementation scope and the organisation’s readiness — not on what is theoretically possible in the best-case implementation. For GCC and Egyptian enterprises, the business case must also account for the cost of Arabic-language configuration, regional regulatory compliance setup, and the organisational change programme that determines whether the improvement case is actually realised.
