A technical architecture review is an independent assessment of the design of a planned or existing enterprise technology system — evaluating the integration architecture, data model, security design, cloud infrastructure configuration, and scalability of the system against the organisation’s current and anticipated requirements — and identifying risks, gaps, and design decisions that will create operational or compliance problems if not addressed before or during implementation.
Technical architecture reviews are most valuable at two points in a programme’s lifecycle. Before implementation begins, a review of the proposed architecture identifies design decisions that need to be revisited while the cost of change is still low — an integration approach that will not scale to the expected transaction volume, a data model that cannot support the reporting requirements the business has defined, a security architecture that does not meet SAMA cybersecurity framework requirements for a regulated financial institution. After implementation, a review of the as-built architecture identifies gaps between what was designed and what was delivered, and between what was delivered and what current and upcoming requirements (IFRS 18, Pillar Two, ZATCA Phase 2) demand.
