Robotic process automation (RPA) is software that executes repetitive, rule-based business processes by interacting with system user interfaces — logging into applications, reading and entering data, copying information between systems, and performing structured decision steps — exactly as a human operator would, without modifying the underlying systems.
RPA is suited to high-volume, structured processes where the inputs are consistent, the rules are defined, and the steps do not vary materially between instances. In finance functions, the most common RPA applications are recurring journal posting, bank statement matching against general ledger entries, intercompany balance confirmation between group entities, management report distribution from data sources to formatted templates, and regulatory report formatting for ZATCA, VAT, or statutory submissions.
The practical limitation of RPA is its rigidity and its dependence on stable interfaces: if the system interface changes, the business rule changes, or the input format changes, the robot breaks and requires maintenance. For GCC and Egyptian enterprises, RPA configuration also requires specific handling of Arabic-language ERP interfaces, Arabic-language data fields, and the character encoding differences between Arabic-native systems and Western platforms.
