The quick ratio is the more conservative liquidity measure, and it is the relevant one when inventory cannot be converted to cash quickly or at full carrying value. For a manufacturing business where finished goods inventory requires weeks of sales process before it generates cash, or a retail business where seasonal inventory may be sold at deep discounts, the quick ratio is a more honest representation of near-term liquidity than the current ratio.

The quick ratio is particularly significant for GCC businesses in the wholesale and distribution sector — where inventory can represent a large proportion of current assets and where inventory turns may be slow. A GCC automotive distributor carrying twelve months of vehicle inventory on its balance sheet may show an acceptable current ratio but a concerning quick ratio, because the vehicle inventory is not immediately liquidatable at carrying value. Lenders to this business who monitor only the current ratio may not detect the liquidity risk that the quick ratio would surface. What the Ratio Cannot Tell You
The quick ratio, like the current ratio, is a point-in-time snapshot that does not capture the timing of cash flows within the current period. A business might have a quick ratio of 1.2 at the balance sheet date but be committed to paying SAR 50 million in trade payables in the next thirty days while expecting to collect only SAR 20 million from receivables in the same period — creating a thirty-day liquidity shortfall that the ratio does not reveal. Cash flow forecasting, typically presented as a thirteen-week rolling cash flow in treasury management, provides the timing picture that ratio analysis cannot.
What Goes Wrong
The quick ratio is frequently calculated incorrectly by including all receivables as if they are fully liquid — without adjusting for receivables that are overdue, disputed, or subject to collection risk. When the receivables component of the quick ratio includes significant aged balances that are unlikely to be collected within the current period, the ratio overstates immediate liquidity. Applying an expected-collection adjustment to the receivables component — or using only current, undisputed receivables in the numerator — produces a quick ratio that more accurately represents true liquid asset coverage.
